Nausea

Man, beginning in his loathsome emptiness of his existence creates his essence - his self, his being through the choices that he freely makes.
- Hayden Carruth on Sartre's work.

I agree to it, except for the loathsome emptiness part. Is that really significant to make a free choice?

Phoenix,I guess thats not what Hayden Carruth implied. Before making a free choice of his living, there is no self or being in man;that condition was referred to as "loathsome emptiness".

hmmm it gets me thinking whether at this poing of time everyone of us are making the choices as the quote says. 'cause most parts of the world are always in the RAT Race.

Pal,you said it yourself. The individual has the right to make a free choice of being a part of the rat race or otherwise.Just a matter of individual perception.
