Existentialism

Unlike tools which are created for a specific purpose, e.g., hammer to drive nails; man's existence is without a meaning or purpose.

man is created to help another man...

anonymous,
The statement is meant to mean that you can choose your own meaning in life. If you choose helping another man is your purpose so be it. But it need not be generalized to all humans.

phoenix I agree with one of your comment, the Hammer has some intended purpose when it is created, but for Man, it's personal choice. He does not have any intended purpose at the time of creation, it is left to him.

Pal agree with you in part here...
however i wouldnt restrict it to just time of creation...

When he is born, i think man's sole purpose is to exist. Then he develops or finds a 'purpose' to cater his 'senses' !?

My 2 cents;
There is no purpose in existence ! Existence in itself is everything.

'everything' ..humm .. to understand this better, i would like to know at least one possible thing contained in this 'everything' ? Also what exactly 'purpose' means ?

gratification is the purpose.

Dear phoenix,
I completely agree with what you are saying and live with this fundamental belief night and day. The problem is that since i've started believing strongly in this philosophy life has lost all color, all romance. It seems there are no conquests to be won, no adventures to be looked forward to for no matter what purpose we choose to arbitrarily impart to our lives there is no final 'Nirvana', no great prize at the end of the race. So life, which seemed a journey for self improvement to gain greater powers of the mind, when i believed in 'Nirvana' now seems a drag.
Do u think there's a way to solve my problem?

It is the journey that is important not the end ! Bhagavad Gita also expresses the same ideology; perform action/duty irrespective of the results; i.e., not attach yourself to the end but enjoy the journey.

How very easy to propound philosophies that way! Tell me one good reason why one shd not be result oriented? And y r u so crazy abt Gita after all it's just another book written by just another guy.

ok.. let me contribute.

No point wondering why we were created or what happens after we are gone. These are questions debated for many centuries and a consensus can never be reached upon because each of us are viewing this world through a small keyhole and insisting thats the only view possible.

as long as we are concious of this moment, can feel life within us, might as well reach out and touch other lives and make a difference right?

Sort of, existence in itself is everything. Seeking meaning is artifical and meaningless.
